Day 0: Plane Flights
Sunday-Monday
My brother and my dad and I have been traveling by air for
the past 18 hours now. We started out in Portland Ore, then flew 3 hours to
Vancouver BC, then flew 7 and a half hours to Frankfurt and now we are on a 7
and a half hour plane ride from Frankfurt to Mumbai, India.
Over this period of traveling, I have accomplished quite a bit.
I started out quite strong by taking on an exercise that my class usually does
in English class. I gave myself a random character “blind boy” and a random
motive and exploration “orphan and talking dog”. From there, over the past
couple hours I came up with a four page story that I am going to show mom when
she arrives.
After I completed the short story, I took a rest before
reading the beginning of the book “Infinite Visions”. This book is about a man
named Dr. V who runs a medical facility in the Indian town called Madurai. We
will be visiting Aravind (the name of the facility) during our travels.
Aravind is THE LARGEST EYE facility in the world. They work
in efforts to prevent needless blindness-something that plagues many in third
world industries. The goal of Aravind is to make things like cataracts
accessible to those who are in need eye treatment, no matter the resources this
person may have. The average cataract at Aravind is 15 dollars, a fraction of
the price one may be forced to pay anywhere else. However, Dr. V notices that
not ALL their customers can afford even 15 dollar treatment. These people can
pay as little as they wish. Many visits are actually free!!
Dr. V-the reporter says-is a very unassuming man. He speaks
in broken English and answers many questions in hyperboles and metaphors.
I read an article in the New York Times that talked about
how the current government in Egypt is showing signs of increasing harshness
when they last night arrested the nonviolent anti-government protestors. This
is one of the first times since the fall of Mubarak that the social government
in Egypt harsh cracked down on protestors.
I saw Part I of the Hobbit for the first time on the plane.
As Jack wittily put the movie was “boreing” and “could be summed up merely ‘the
creepy dudes are fighting the short dudes over a rock that has some sort of
power’”. So true

I am writing this while jack and Dave are sleeping away
soundly.
I can’t wait to land. Five hours to go.
